Flame-retardant fabric

Inherently flame-retardant (IFR) curtain fabric, by the roll

Woven from 100% IFR polyester yarn, so the flame resistance sits in the fiber rather than in a finish. 2.8–3.2 m wide, in sheer and blackout weights. For small runs, FR-treated fabric starts from one roll.

IFR or FR-treated

Where the flame resistance comes from

Inherently flame-retardant (IFR)

The flame resistance is built into the polyester yarn before weaving.

In a flame, the fabric pulls back from the heat and chars, and it is designed to go out by itself when the flame is taken away.

Minimum: from 5,000 meters.

FR-treated

The fabric is woven first and a flame-retardant finish goes on afterward. Most base fabrics can be treated, so the look and texture are wide open.

Since the protection sits in the finish, check how the fabric should be cleaned and how long the finish lasts for your use.

Minimum: from 1 roll, about 50–120 meters depending on the fabric.

Testing

How fire testing works

  1. Name the standard

Tell us the destination market, the end use and the standard your project requires, for example NFPA 701 in the US.

  2. Confirm the fabric

The construction, testing cost and timing are confirmed before you book.

  3. Test your order's fabric

Testing is arranged at a third-party lab on the fabric in your order, and adds about 10 days.

Questions

IFR curtain fabric questions

What does IFR mean?

IFR stands for inherently flame retardant. The flame resistance is built into the polyester yarn before weaving, rather than added to the fabric as a finish.

Is IFR fabric fireproof?

No fabric is fireproof. In a flame, IFR fabric pulls back from the heat and chars, and it is designed to go out by itself when the flame is taken away.

Is flame retardant the same as fire retardant?

Buyers use flame retardant, fire retardant, flame resistant and fire resistant for the same requirement. What counts is the test standard your project names.

Which fire standards can the fabric be tested to?

Testing is arranged per order against the standard required by the destination market. Tell us the standard, for example NFPA 701 in the US, and the fabric, cost and timing are confirmed before you book.

Why is testing done per order?

A fire test covers the exact fabric that went to the lab, so testing is done on the fabric in your order. It adds about 10 days.

What weights and widths are available?

All IFR fabric is 2.8–3.2 m wide. Sheer is 90–200 gsm and blackout is 200–350 gsm.

What is the minimum order for flame-retardant fabric?

IFR yarn fabric starts at 5,000 meters. FR-treated fabric starts from one roll, about 50–120 meters depending on the fabric.

Do you also supply FR-treated fabric?

Yes. Most base fabrics can be treated and the minimum is one roll, so it suits small project runs and fabrics that are not available in IFR yarn. Testing is arranged per order in the same way.
